The San Antonio St. project, located near the Capitol in downtown Austin is a historical restoration and a conversion from residential to commercial two story building built in the 1920s. A majority of the exterior work was associated with meeting ADA standards. Building a wheelchair accessible ramp to the front of the building and a stairway in the back made the newly updated office space accessible to all visitors.
The original interior structure was gutted down to studs in order to replace the knob-and-tube electrical system. We were able to salvage the hardwood floors and ship-lap siding in the hallways and back rooms. The bathrooms and kitchens were designed and built to meet ADA standards.
The most challenging part of the project was working within the confines of the original 1920s structure and also meeting the requirements of ADA. We worked closely with Jobe Coral Architects to meet the ADA requirements update where necessary while capturing and maintaining the character of the historical building.
